Ukulele player at a fancy hotel
Very few people know that it is a dream of mine to retire in Hawaii as an ukulele player at a fancy hotel. I would be surrounded by happy people in paradise and playing happy music, what could be better?
A few years ago while visiting Maui we rented a cottage and became friends with the owners. Over the years we’ve discussed running their business so they could travel but the time was never right for us and that prospect was not even on our minds lately, which made the following circumstances interesting, to say the least.
One Saturday morning a few weeks ago I woke up feeling that change was not just wanted but needed. I happened to be wearing a Maui t-shirt and as I looked at it in the mirror I said to Nat, “…if our friends call from Maui today and ask us to go there in May to take care of their place, I’ll go to work on Monday, resign and instead of going to look at new apartments (did I mention we have to move on April 30th?) we’ll pack up our shit and jump on a plane to Maui.
Unprompted and unsolicited
No more than five minutes later Nat’s email chimed. It was our friends in Maui, unprompted and solicited. They had gotten up that morning and decided they wanted to travel in May and could we run their place for a while.
Obviously both of our minds were completely blown to have my bluff so epically called. I was sure Nat was setting me up but there it was, I asked and she answered.
Nat, sporting a huge smile, with her hands on her hips said “How’s that for a sign? What are you gonna do now Harris?”
“Well it looks like we’re packing our bags!” I laughed.
As my good buddy later said, it is so rare that the universe steps up and answers those requests, who am I to deny it?
So, here I stand in a stripped and barren apartment, a few days until I leave the restaurant for good and less than a week until we’ll be jetting off to Hawaii.
For those of you who think this was an easy decision, you would be wrong. Leaving the comforts of a job, family and familiar surroundings is a very difficult thing to do, especially since we’re not in our 20’s anymore, but we only have this life to live and we are not ready to settle for anything but true happiness.
So tune in and follow us as we dive into Hawaiian culture and Polynesian cuisine straight from paradise in Hana, Maui, Hawaii.
Now the only question left is, which ukulele do I bring?

This is very exciting. I just met a chef from Maui in Toronto after getting back from Algonquin, and some chef friends of mine were there last month. I’m going to connect you all by e-mail. Happy adventures!

That would be great, Thanks Valerie!

That is so exciting and incredibly fortunate, I almost cannot believe that your friend called at the right time. I’m sure it wasn’t easy to quit everything and decide to go as you said, but I’m sure it’ll be for the best and you’ll have an amazing time! Looking forward to know all about your new Hawaiian life 🙂

Tim & Nat, I love this! Congratulations, you two! It’s all gonna be a blur from here on out, right up to the moment you set foot in the house in Hawaii. Enjoy and savour every moment! 🙂

We are definitely on auto pilot right now. Been through this twice before, third time is a charm, as they say.

Amazing. The universe works in mysterious ways sometimes…and other times she smacks you right in the gob. Hawaii sounds like a fantastic opportunity. Good luck!
