Engulfed
We’ve been living in Olinda since mid June. Olinda is close to 4000ft up Haleakala volcano on Maui. The mornings and evenings are cool and there are more eucalyptus than palm trees but it has its charm. One of the things we love is that once in a while we’ll find ourselves engulfed in clouds. It makes creating pictures that much easier.
Have you ever been stuck in the clouds? Where were you?
Irene S. Levine says
I’ve been stuck in the clouds at the top of Mount Washington, in New Hampshire. This looks like it could be a bit depressing~
Nat & Tim says
If it lasted days it would probably start getting me down but this comes and goes within an hour. The weather changes quickly and a lot up here.

We were stuck in some magical clouds in Cantabria , Spain, a little more than a year ago. We could hear mules on the near hillside, but not see them, and then as they emerged, we were still facing the blank wall of clouds that covered to opposite mountains. Green Cantabria! It looks not unlike your photos from Maui.
Nat & Tim says
Sounds wonderful!

Love the dreamy landscapes!
Nat & Tim says
Thanks Maria!

Ethereal! Loved the soft, green, misty landscapes. We live amongst the gums and eucalypts in South West Australia, and only in winter are we privvy to green landscapes ๐
Nat & Tim says
We really must make it to Australia some day.

I love clouds and notice them all the time. You live in a beautiful area. I love all parts of Maui other than the southern section which is alright, but the central and northern area are incredible, Thank you for sharing your amazing photos.
Nat & Tim says
Thanks for stopping by Michelle.

Aloha! Love the change of mood in your micro-climate, great photos. We’ve actually been above the clouds here on Kauai at the Kalalau Overlook in Koke’e State Park, a thin place (where the line between heaven and earth is blurred) like Haleakala. ๐
Nat & Tim says
I love that thin place ๐
Anita @ No Particular Place To Go says
I love the cloud forests that can be found throughout Central America and the micro-climates in the Hawaiin islands are similar. Lovely photos!
Nat & Tim says
Thank you so much.
Laura @Travelocafe says
Wonderful shots. It’s so satisfying to be in the right place at the right moment, isn’t it?
Nat & Tim says
Yes it is, especially when that moment is fleeting.

Love the mood and feel, reminds me of Volcano on the Big Island, but too cold for me except for nice short visits.
Nat & Tim says
it does get pretty chilly.
Lis Sowerbutts says
Wow – that doesn’t look like Hawaii – Maui is high on my list of places to see – it’s pretty close to NZ but the airfare is a bit hgh!
Nat & Tim says
Maui has many different micro climates.

I’ve been in clouds on the sides of mountains in Hawaii, Costa RIca, Massachusetts, New Zealand—those are the ones I can remember right now. My favorite part of a plane ride is either ascending or descending through the cloud layer and then popping out either below the clouds where you can see the landscape (hopefully) or above the clouds into brilliant sunshine.
Nat & Tim says
That’s my favourite part of flying as well.
Marilyn Jones says
Your photos are so mysteriously beautiful. Well done! I really enjoyed looking at them!!
Nat & Tim says
Thank you Marilyn!

The fog adds a different feel to Hawaii. My shots from a recent trip to Kauai are mostly sunshine, http://travelswithcarole.blogspot.com/search/label/Kauai
Nat & Tim says
That’s the beauty of a small island, if it’s cloudy where you are you can just drive half an hour to find sunshine ๐
Neva @ Retire for the Fun of it says
I love your photos for the misty and fresh look of the area. My moment of drifting through clouds is while skydiving and it’s a very unique experience. Thanks for showing us your part of the island that I haven’t seen yet.
Nat & Tim says
Going through the clouds while skydiving sounds amazing although I don’t think I’ll be doing that any time soon.

The last time we had our heads in the clouds was in the cloudforest of Costa Rica – fantastic! We had a hard time capturing the mood on camera though – kudos to you! Well done!
Nat & Tim says
Thanks so much.
Donna Janke says
I love the fog and mist in your pictures. I could almost smell the eucalyptus.
Nat & Tim says
Thank you Donna.

Guatemala has many misty towns located in the cloud forests of the highlands. It makes it very atmospheric — much like in your photos- and I love it because you don’t feel obliged to go outdoors as you might on a sunny day. You can just stay indoors, light the fireplace and curl up with a book .
Nat & Tim says
A few people mentioned the could forests, I’d love to see them one day.
Linda ~ Journey Jottings says
Watching the mist roll in and then as the strength of the sun evaporates it till the air is crystal clear and sparking again –
The changing atmospheres is a complete delight isn’t it!
Nat & Tim says
It’s something else for sure.
Shelley says
Great photos! Fog rolling in can bring a great mysterious atmosphere to the day. We were fogged in once while staying at a small inn near Mount Fuji. It was so thick we couldn’t see Fuji at all! We did eventually see it from much further away at Japan Disney.

How pretty to be living up in the clouds! It must be a nice change from the sun and heat down by the beaches…
